Heart vs Head Space

In the Charismatic Church I’ve seen a great pull between knowing the Word of God and being led by the Spirit of God. Many feel it is more important to know the Word; allowing God to fill your head-space in order to be effective in your witness. They spend a lot of time memorizing scriptures in preparation to be able to preach the Gospel using it as in 2 Timothy 3:16 – 17 states “for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works”. Others, however believe it is more important to be led by the Spirit of God in order to allow God to fill your heart-space in order to be able to walk out your witness before others. They spend a lot of time in prayer, praise and worship in order to experience the presence of God so as to receive instruction from Holy Spirit because according to John 16:13 “he will guide you into all truth”. I believe both aspects are equally important.

I believe we believers should invest as much time getting to know God by spending time in his presence as we do getting to know about him through His Word.

I believe we believers should invest as much time getting to know God by spending time in his presence as we do getting to know about him through His Word. Knowing about him by His word introduces Him to the our head-space. As we meditate on the Word we learn about his nature and character. It also builds a desire in our hearts to  come to know him on a more intimate level thereby filling you’re heart space. That desire leads us to spend more time in prayer, praise, and worship which then opens us up to being led by the Spirit of God, and creates the passion necessary to share the Word of God you’ve learned with others.

God occupying the head-space and heart-space of the believer are equally valuable. Consider the scripture in Proverbs 23:7 “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he” when pondering how the mind and heart work together to develop us in our walk with God. There is no need to pit one approach against the other because they work together to develop not only our witness, but our character. One can not be effective without the other!
